The short version
Sometimes it is the card, but more often the Korean checkout just does not accept foreign cards. Before you switch cards, switch the payment method.

Right now
- 1Before you switch to another card, look for a different payment option on the same screen, like quick pay or an overseas payment choice.
- 2If overseas payment is blocked, turn on international use in your card issuer's app.
- 3If that still fails, check whether the service has a separate route that accepts foreign cards.
What to have ready
- Two or more cards: If one is blocked somewhere, another may go through.
- Your card issuer's app: Where you check international-use settings and alerts.
Phrases you can copy and paste
Step by step
- 1
See where it failed
Whether sign up worked but payment failed, or the card would not register at all, changes the fix. Find out which step first.
- 2
Check the settings on the card issuer's side
- Where:
- Card issuer app, customer service
An overseas-payment block, a limit or a fraud block may be on. This is fixed at the card issuer, not the service.
- 3
Try a different payment method
On the same service, registering quick pay, using a foreign-card checkout, or switching from the app to the web can work.
- 4
If it still fails, route around it
A bank transfer, paying in person, or topping up a domestic quick-pay account are other paths a service may allow.
The Korean words
- 간편결제ganpyeon-gyeolje· quick pay
- Saving a card as an in-app payment method.
- 해외 결제haeoe gyeolje· overseas payment
- A payment on a card issued abroad. Your issuer may block it by default.
- 이상거래 차단isang-georae chadan· fraud block
- The issuer blocking what it reads as a suspicious charge. A call clears it.
Easy to miss
- Sign up can go through while a foreign card quietly fails at the payment step.
- The card can be fine and still be declined because of the issuer's overseas-payment block.
You can skip this if
- If you already have a domestic account or a domestic card, you can skip this one.
When it is time for a person
- If the card and every payment method stay blocked and you still cannot pay, it may be time for a person who can help with settling in more broadly.
