A Saturday in Yeongdo, the day Yeongdo Bridge lifts

Busan's Yeongdo is an island you reach by crossing a single bridge from Nampo-dong. It has four main sights: a bridge that lifts, a village of ship repair yards, lanes clinging to cliffs above the sea, and Taejongdae at the tip of the island. You can see all four in one day, but pick the wrong day of the week and half of them are closed. The bridge lifts only on Saturdays, the shipyard village tours run only on weekends, and the Taejongdae shuttle bus is off on Mondays and Tuesdays. So this guide is built around a single Saturday.

In the morning, see Taejongdae first. The shuttle bus starts at 9:30, and tickets can run out in the afternoon. After lunch, get to the Yeongdo Tourist Information Center beside Yeongdo Bridge by 13:45 and watch the 14:00 lift. Then take the 15:00 boat tour at Kkangkkangi Village, and before sunset walk Huinnyeoul Culture Village and the coastal path. The Huinnyeoul information center closes at 18:00.

All eight photos in this guide are openly licensed on Wikimedia Commons. Christophe95 took the two looking down over the sea at Taejongdae on September 28, 2018, and Ahmed photographed Yeongdo Lighthouse in October 2019. The Yeongdo Bridge photos are one aerial shot by Minseong Kim from 2015 and two that Mobius6 captured on May 23, 2020. Choi2451 released the seaside lane in Huinnyeoul Culture Village under CC0, and Appleysj took the rooftops at dusk. Apart from that one CC0 photo, all seven are licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. We could not find a usable openly licensed photo of Kkangkkangi Art Village, so none appears here.

The short version

Yeongdo Bridge lifts only at 14:00 on Saturdays.

Kkangkkangi Art Village tours run only on weekends, and the Taejongdae shuttle bus is off on Mondays and Tuesdays. To see all four of Yeongdo's sights in one day, go on a Saturday. You cannot board the Kkangkkangi boat without a physical ID, so foreign travelers need to bring their passport. Two official websites give different Taejongdae timetables, so follow the Busan Tourism Organization, which runs the service. Huinnyeoul Culture Village is a set of lanes where people live, so do not go there late in the evening.

Deadlines that matter

  • Get a spot for the Yeongdo Bridge lift

    By when: Saturday 13:45

If you miss it: The bridge stays raised for only a few minutes. It starts rising at 14:02, stands at 55 degrees by 14:07 and starts coming down at 14:09. The lift happens only once a week, so if you miss it, you wait for the next Saturday.

  • Free Taejongdae shuttle bus ticket

    By when: 17:30

If you miss it: Tickets are issued for each run on a first-come, first-served basis. In the afternoon they can run out first, so see Taejongdae in the morning.

  • Last Kkangkkangi boat tour departure

    By when: Weekends 15:00

If you miss it: The boat tour leaves at 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00 on weekends. If you take the 15:00 boat after watching the bridge lift, the timing works.

  • Huinnyeoul information center (film archive)

    By when: 18:00

If you miss it: The information center closes at 18:00. You can still walk the lanes after that, but Yeongdo-gu Office has asked visitors not to come late because residents live there.

Yeongdo Bridge lifts once a week, on Saturdays from 14:00 to 14:15. The lift resumed on June 11, 2022, and has kept this schedule since. Here is the sequence. At 14:00 a siren sounds and cars and people are stopped. At 14:02 the bridge starts to rise, and by 14:07 it stands at 55 degrees. After time for photos until 14:09, it starts to come down, and traffic reopens at 14:15. The bridge stays raised for only a few minutes, so take your spot around 13:45. Announcements and music start at that time. A good place to watch is the Yeongdo Tourist Information Center at the Yeongdo end of the bridge. It is at 79 Bongnaenaru-ro, Yeongdo-gu, Busan, and opens from 09:00 to 18:00. It is closed on New Year's Day and on the days of Seollal and Chuseok, and admission is free.

Huinnyeoul Culture Village is a cluster of small houses pressed along narrow lanes at the edge of a seaside cliff. Visit Busan describes it as the place where refugees began their lives. In December 2011, empty houses were renovated into cultural spaces for local artists and residents. The film "The Attorney" and other productions were shot here, and hizine lists the village as a filming location for the dramas "Good Boy" and "Taxi Driver 3". The village itself is a street, so there is no admission fee. The Huinnyeoul information center (film archive) is at 194 Jeoryeong-ro, Yeongdo-gu, Busan, and opens from 10:00 to 18:00. It is closed on January 1 and on the days of Seollal and Chuseok. Yeongdo-gu Office has written, "Residents live here, so please refrain from visiting late." Taking photos or talking loudly in the lanes after dark means doing it right outside someone's window. Below the village, the Jeoryeong Coastal Walk runs 3km along the sea. Its address is 52 Haeansanchaek-gil, Yeongdo-gu, Busan, and it is open all year.

기상특보gisang teukbo, weather warning
Advisories and warnings for strong wind, heavy rain or typhoons. When one is issued, the bridge lift and the boat can stop.

Easy to miss

  • In bad weather, Yeongdo Bridge does not lift. It stops when a strong wind advisory, typhoon advisory or higher, or a heavy rain warning or higher is in effect. It is also called off when the temperature is 30 degrees or above or minus 5 degrees or below, and when a heavy snow advisory is issued. Weather on the day, such as a sudden shower, can also stop it. On a midsummer Saturday, go knowing that the trip may be wasted.
  • The Busan Infrastructure Corporation's Taejongdae page still shows the Danubi Train timetable (off-season 09:20~17:30, closed on Mondays). The shuttle bus is off on Mondays and Tuesdays, which does not match that table. The current situation is on the website of the Busan Tourism Organization, which runs the service. The phone number for inquiries is 051-405-8745.
  • Kkangkkangi Art Village is in Daepyeong-dong, across from Jagalchi Market, where Yeongdo Bridge and Namhang Bridge meet. It has long been a village of ship repair yards, and in the late 19th century it was home to the Tanaka Shipyard, the first in Korea to build boats using an engine. Since 2016 the village has been redecorated with murals and public art. Regular tours run only on Saturdays and Sundays. On weekdays, only groups of 10 or more can book. The information center is at 36 Daepyeongbuk-ro, Yeongdo-gu, Busan, and the phone number is 051-418-3336.
  • The Kkangkkangi Art Village website lists three tours. The boat tour (Kkangkkangi cruise boat) takes about 20 minutes and costs 6,000 won. It leaves at 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00 on weekends. The village tour with a guide takes about 40 minutes, costs 6,000 won and leaves at 14:20 on weekends. The combined boat and village tour takes about 70 minutes and costs 10,000 won. It leaves at 14:00 on weekends. Yeongdo-gu Office's tourism page on the same village says "twice a day every Saturday and Sunday", 6,000 won, and no tours on Mondays. The two pages give different numbers of tours, so check that day's departure times again on the booking page.
  • You cannot board the Kkangkkangi boat without a physical ID. If you are a foreign traveler, bring your passport. This means a photo saved on your phone will not do. Children under 12 must ride with a guardian, and sailings can be canceled when a weather warning is issued. Taking the 15:00 boat tour after watching the bridge lift fits the timing.
  • Bus stop directions for Huinnyeoul Culture Village differ from page to page. Yeongdo-gu Office says to take bus 508, 85 or 82 from Busan Station and get off at Huinnyeoul Culture Village (흰여울문화마을). Visit Busan says to transfer to bus 7, 71 or 508 at Exit 6 of Nampo Station on Busan Metro Line 1 and get off at Yeongseon-dong Baengnyeonsa (영선동 백련사). Both routes take you to the village, so follow the one that suits where you start.

You can skip this if

  • If you go on a Sunday, the bridge will not lift, but the regular Kkangkkangi tours and the Taejongdae shuttle bus run. On weekdays, only groups of 10 or more can book a Kkangkkangi tour, and on Mondays and Tuesdays the Taejongdae shuttle bus is off too.
