The short version
Myeongdong is the first busy district most visitors run into in Seoul. Leaving after the main street of cosmetics shops and food carts would be a shame: the cathedral and the old theatre sit just off it, the cable car up Namsan is a short uphill walk, and after dark the same street turns into a different place.
Right now
- 1The whole walk sits between Myeongdong Station on Line 4 and Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2. Exit 6 at Myeongdong drops you straight onto the main street; Exit 5 or 6 at Euljiro 1-ga starts you from the north end.
- 2The food carts are mostly absent during the day. If street food is the point, come after sunset.
- 3For a map or a lost-and-found question, the Myeongdong Tourist Information Center is at Euljiro 66, on the ground floor of the Hana Financial Group annex, open 09:00 to 18:00.
Getting there
Incheon Airport, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2
Take the AREX train to Seoul Station, either the all-stop or the express. Change to Line 4 in the direction of Dongdaemun (trains signed Danggogae or Jinjeop) and get off two stops later at Myeongdong.

With heavy luggage, the 6015 airport limousine bus stops on the Myeongdong side of the district, which saves the stairs at Seoul Station.
Seoul Station
Line 4 toward Dongdaemun (Danggogae or Jinjeop trains), two stops: Hoehyeon, then Myeongdong.

On foot it is 20 to 25 minutes, and the route passes straight through Namdaemun Market on the way.
Hongdae (where many stay)
At Hongik University Station on Line 2, take the inner circle line (toward Sinchon and City Hall). No transfer: get off at Euljiro 1-ga and use Exit 5 or 6.

The outer circle line in the other direction goes the long way round through Gangnam and takes more than twice as long. Platforms and train fronts say inner or outer.
Once you are at Myeongdong Station, on foot
Exit 6 opens onto Myeongdong-gil, the main street. Follow it east and uphill for about ten minutes to reach the cathedral, then come back down past the theatre and finish at Euljiro 1-ga. For Namsan, go the other way: Exit 4, then uphill for about ten minutes to the cable car.

Everything here is inside a few blocks, so it is easier to pick a direction than to follow a map.
What to have ready
- A little cash: Some carts take cards, but cash keeps the line moving.
- Your passport: Shops that refund tax on the spot need to see the physical passport, not a photo of it.
- Comfortable shoes: The main street is flat; the walk up to the cable car is not.

Myeongdong street

Myeongdong-gil and the lanes beside it are the district's main street. Cosmetics shops, clothing stores and money changers alternate almost building by building, and someone stands outside every other door handing out samples. By day the crowd is shoppers and tourists; from late afternoon the food carts move into the middle of the road and the street narrows to half its width. Most shops have signs in English, Japanese and Chinese, so getting stuck for lack of words is rare. To compare prices, do not buy at the first shop on the main street; walk one block into the side lanes first.

The evening food carts

- The middle of Myeongdong-gil, heading north from Exit 6 at Myeongdong Station
As the light goes, carts take their places one by one, and by full dark the centre of Myeongdong-gil is a street of stalls. Most of it is food you eat while walking: chicken skewers, spiral potatoes, egg bread, fried dumplings. Many carts post prices, some do not, so ask before you order. Cards work at some carts, but cash is quicker. At the busiest hour the queues block the middle of the street, so find a spot to stand before you buy.

Myeongdong Cathedral

The mother church of Korean Catholicism, completed in 1898. Follow Myeongdong-gil uphill and the red brick cathedral appears on a rise, and the moment you step into the courtyard the noise of the street drops by half. The Gothic interior can be visited quietly outside Mass times. A shopping arcade runs underneath and a cafe sits beside the courtyard, so it also works as a place to sit down when the shopping has worn you out. In December trees go up in the courtyard and the outside walls are lit at night.

Myeongdong Kyoja

One of the restaurants in Myeongdong with the longest-standing queue. The menu is short, knife-cut noodle soup, dumplings and cold mixed noodles, and kimchi lands on the table before anyone asks what you want. The dumplings floating in the noodle soup and the sharp garlic kimchi are the house signature, so a bowl of kalguksu is the place to start. The line is long at lunch and dinner, but tables turn fast and the wait is shorter than it looks. There is a main branch and a second branch in Myeongdong, so if one queue is out of hand, walk to the other.

Myeongdong Theater

- On Myeongdong-gil itself, halfway between the two stations
A building put up as a theatre in 1936 still stands in the middle of the main street. Today the National Theater Company stages plays here, and in the evening the audience gathers at the entrance. Just seeing the rounded roofline and the arched windows from outside tells you how long this district has been the busy part of town. Most productions are in Korean, though some carry English surtitles, so read the posters and ask at the box office.

Namsan Cable Car
- Where:
- From Exit 4 at Myeongdong Station, about ten minutes uphill toward Namsan
Leave Exit 4 at Myeongdong Station and walk uphill toward Namsan for about ten minutes to reach the lower cable car station. If the slope is too much, the Namsan Oreumi, an inclined lift partway up, carries you to the station entrance. The cable car takes about three minutes to reach the top of Namsan, and the window looks straight down over Myeongdong and the city toward Seoul Station. Fares and operating hours are posted at the ticket office and on the official site, so check before you go. On weekend afternoons and around sunset the queue can pass an hour.

Two department stores and the winter lights

At the western edge of Myeongdong stands the Shinsegae main store; at the northern edge, the Lotte main store and Lotte Young Plaza. Shinsegae still uses its 1930 department store building, worth a look from the pavement alone. Both stores have large basement food halls and tax refund counters for foreign visitors. In winter the whole outer wall of the Shinsegae main store becomes a wall of light and animation and people gather across the road to watch; the dates and hours change every year, so check the notice first.

The Korean words
- 노점nojeom, street cart
- A cart or stall selling on the pavement. In Myeongdong they come out in the evening.
- 칼국수kalguksu, knife-cut noodle soup
- Flat noodles cut from dough with a knife, served in a hot broth.
- 즉시 환급jeuksi hwangeup, on-the-spot tax refund
- The tax comes off at the till when you show your passport, instead of at the airport.

- The ride from the bottom of Namsan to the top. Namsan is the hill behind Myeongdong.

- The Catholic service. During Mass the cathedral is a place of prayer, not a sight.
Easy to miss
- Some carts post prices and some do not. Asking the price before you order is normal here.
- On the main street plenty of staff press samples into your hand. Taking one does not mean you have to go inside.
- The cable car station is uphill from Myeongdong Station and the weekend afternoon queue is long. If time is tight, a weekday daytime ride is easier.
- During Mass, the cathedral is a place of worship, not a sight. Walk quietly inside and take photos outside of Mass times.
You can skip this if
- If crowds wear you down, the main street by day is not for you. Take in the cathedral courtyard and Namsan and slip out.
- If you are hoping for bargains, expect to be disappointed. The same cosmetics can cost more in a tourist-district shop than in a neighbourhood one.

- If you are thinking of renting near Myeongdong, around Hoehyeon or Euljiro, it helps to talk to someone who knows how the tourist-district noise and the housing stock differ block by block.
